Sharks
The Whale Shark season starts this month on Christmas Island, now accessible via Singapore on a weekly Silk Air charter jet. (eliminating lengthy and costly flights via Perth, Australia)
Whale Shark season continues in Kenya and Djibouti, with both East African countries offering shore based and liveaboard diving to swim with these giants.
Hammerhead and Zambezi shark season continue in southern Mozambique; while to the south, Hammerhead, Zambezi, and Tiger Sharks are often spotted in December off Protea Banks, South Africa....
Book your liveaboard to Guadeloupe Island, off the Pacific coast of Mexico, to see the Great White Sharks before then end of the month.
Starting in December and ending in April of each year, numerous Bull Sharks are seen in the Cocos Islands, and Malpeno Islands off the coast of Costa Rica.
Manta Rays
Following the end of the southwest monsoon season, and the onset of the northeast monsoon, Manta Rays shift to the west side of the Maldive Atolls to feed and visit cleaner stations. Rasfari (North Male Atoll) and Maamagili (south Ari Atoll) are great places for Manta Ray encounters; with Manthiri and Nooranee Queen liveaboards also visiting dive sites where mantas commonly congregate.
Meanwhile, in the Western Pacific Ocean, the Manta Ray season also starts in Yap, Micronesia, one of the few countries in the world with resident manta populations, (who are thought not to migrate due to the deep water surrounding the country). Mantas gather to feed in the plankton rich waters filtered through narrow channels between the islands of Yap, famous for it's large stone money.
December is also when Eagle Ray encounters become more frequent off the island of Cozumel, Mexico.
Killer Whales
The Killer Whales (Orcas) season ends in Fjordland, Norway; while Humpback whale season starts in the islands of Hawaii;
The four month long spawning season starts for grouper in Belize;
Turtles
Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles start to be seen in Tamarindo Bay, Costa Rica; while much further south in Australia, the Green and Loggerhead turtle egg laying seasons continues, in Queensland, (Heron Island) and on Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.
Antarctica
The summer season continues on Antarctica, with sightings of whales, different kinds of seabirds, penguins and seals.
To the north, off the southern coast of New Zealand, near Duneiden, Yellow Eyed penguins continue their breeding season.
