    CHRISTMAS ISLAND

    Contact ZeroBar.org for booking information.

Made world famous by an iconic National Geographic magazine article highlighting the fascinating annual crab migration, Christmas Island is one of Australia's best kept diving secrets, where whale shark encounters abound between November and March each year. Here, many whalesharks congregate in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean to feed, and with a yearly migration of seabirds, the island is a mecca for sealife of all kinds.

CITAblowholes.JPGAs a crossroads of Asian and Australian cultures, Christmas Island also has a fascinating history of trade and contact between east and west, reflected today in the island's multicultural population.

    The Diving

With steep dropoffs and brilliant reefs, encounters with whale sharks is what brings most divers to Christmas Island, where thick fish life and white sand beaches beckon after the diving.

The whale shark season on Christmas Island lasts from November to March each year. Zerobar.org sends divers to this remote island via a convenient airlink from Singapore on AustAsia Airways. Contact ZeroBar.org here for more information.

World renowned conservationists, photographers and researchers will visit Christmas Island
between the 31st of August and the 6th of September, to witness Abbots and Redfooted Boobies, Christmas Island Frigate birds, and many more.

    Crab Migration

Nothing on earth can compare to the millions upon millions of red crabs that migrate across the island when it comes time to mate, leaving roads, hillsides and beaches marked blood red by the crawly creatures. When the crabs eggs have hatched, a reverse migration occurs, with microscopic crabs moving back to the forest from where they came, until they complete the journey their parents made back to the forest. Timing diving with witnessing this amazing migration is tricky, but it generally occurs in November/December.

    Getting There:

Long difficult to reach, a new airlink from Singapore via AustAsia Airlines has made this paradise far easier to reach from North America, Europe and Asia. Previously, Perth was the major gateway, making a visit to the island an expensive northern backtrack practically all the way back from Indonesia.

    What to expect:

As an isolated island situated between northwest Australia and to the south of Java, Indonesia, few international visitors venture here, and locals are friendly, helpful, and always eager to show out of towners around their small piece of paradise.
